Similes
a) Explain the concept of a simile (i.e., words or phrases connected by “like” or “as” that suggest a similarity between two dissimilar items); differentiate similes from metaphors (i.e., the latter do not use “like” or “as”)
b) Write on the blackboard a number of words for which students (either individually or in teams) should develop similes. Then have students offer their suggested similes for each word. A suggested list of words follows with possible similes noted in parenthesis.
1) Dark as (the night, midnight, a shadow)
2) A memory like (a computer)
3) Deep as (the ocean)
4) Big as (the sky)
5) Pleased as (punch, the Cheshire cat)
6) Dead as (a doornail)
7) Soft as (a whisper, a kitten’s fur)
8) Tough as (nails)
9) Strong as (steel)
10) Cold as (ice, winter)
