Comics

Level: Beginning +

Provides Practice of: speaking, listening, writing, reading

Grammar: any chosen by the student or teacher

Vocabulary: any chosen by the student or teacher

Materials: comic strip stories cut up in individual scenes, comic strip copies with some blanked out bubbles of speech or blanked out words to fill in the blanks (teacher chooses which to erase), comic strip copies with all bubbles of speech blanked out

Time: 30 minutes (if doing all)

Procedure: As a warm-up, ask students if they read comic strips. Which are their favorites? Where do they find them? Are they funny, serious, etc.? Ask students to give an example of a story they remember reading in a comic strip. Now, you decide which type of activity to do or you can do them all. You may begin by giving pairs/groups of students cut up scenes of comic strip dialogues. Students must put them in order. This is a more structured activity. Next, give students copies of comic strips but with some blanked out bubbles of speech or words to fill in the blanks (which you prepared and erased beforehand). Students must fill in the bubbles/blanks with their own creative writing. Next, give students copies of comic strips with all bubbles of speech completely erased. Students must create their own stories and write in each bubble. After all pairs/groups have finished, trade comic strips to enjoy the creativity of the students.
